Blame is a funny thing. It shifts responsibility for something that has gone bad or wrong onto someone else. It relieves us from feeling fault, regret or responsibility.

For instance, when anything of value is missing in my home I am quick to start pointing fingers. I rarely, if never, stop and say, “I must have misplaced it!” Inevitably when hours, days or months later the missing valuable item is found--right where I left it--I mutter something under my breath and move past my bad quickly. No formal, or informal, exoneration is ever issued.

My blame technique is flawless and there is not a situation I can’t deflect:
Missed a bill payment...the post office never delivered the invoice.
Missed an appointment...my last sync must have deleted it.
Missing a shirt...the housekeeper lost it.
Missing my credit card...my husband hid it.
Missed my flight...security delayed me.
Missing a computer file...hackers.
Gained five pounds...hidden undisclosed calories in my Ruffles.

Go ahead try me! I’ve perfected the art of being perfect by blaming everyone else for any mishaps that come within ten miles of me. Ask my husband he’ll confirm it.

Let’s be honest, blame is a tactic we all seem to gravitate towards. It is easier to be mad at someone else than at ourselves. It’s easier to point fingers at someone else. It is easier to let someone else take the fall, bear the brunt, be the bad guy and do the work than to look in the mirror and take the load upon the reflection. Blaming someone else for everything else is always the easier choice.

But today we sit on arguably the most historic election in the past hundred years and we have a chance to either vote and take responsibility for our country’s future or stay home and blame others for the direction our politics take. From the Queen of Blame, today of all days put your pointers aside and Rock the Vote.

Au revoir for now...n
