On my way to sit down at my desk to write this article, I heard the dryer ending its cycle. I ventured into my other office--the laundry room--to pull out my husband’s white tee shirts and get them folded while they were still warm and wrinkle-free.

I knew I needed to get my bottom in my desk chair and avoid further distractions, but as I was putting away the fresh laundry I noticed my child’s closet was in desperate need of organization. There were multiple jackets on the floor that needed hangers and shoes that weren’t on shelves.

After gathering up an armful of pajamas and recently worn clothing that would benefit from a trip to the laundry room, I walked past a bed that needed to be made. Unable to get any further in my day with such an important task uncompleted, I thought of my girlfriend Shawn who makes her kid’s beds as they are still getting their feet on the floor and smiled thinking how I had let an entire hour pass by before straightening out the blankets and fluffing up the pillows. What would she think?

Time to write now, right? Wrong. A trip to my bathroom revealed that towels were untidy and hair bands were left out. Then back to the laundry room to get a new load in the washer. (If that appliance isn’t spinning at all times, I’m behind.)

Then my brain really started firing out demands:

Grab the American Express card in case I have time to order a few holiday gifts.

Turn on CNN in case any earth shattering post-election news breaks.

Stop in your tracks and watch President Bush give a tear-jerking speech to his staff thanking them for their service.

Find out why the dog is barking.

Get a pot of water boiling on the stove to get some moisture in the air.

Make another cup of coffee.

Save yesterday’s paper from the trash for the historical headline, “Obama Sweeps to Historic Victory.”

Send a thank you note before you forget to the in-laws for the fabulous dinner they took us too last night.

Get doctor appointments on the calendar.

And finally, get your satire down on paper.

Publish and ask readers, “Is this multi-tasking or do I have attention-deficit disorder?”

Read responses as soon as you get back from Whole Foods and are finished with whatever else distracts you on the way to your email box.

Au revoir for now...n
